If you are using the new Audio tag of HTML5, you will have to two versions of your favorite audio file, the .mp3 format and .ogg format. Why? It's not because HTML5 requires the 2 files, but rather not all browsers support both formats. For example, Firefox only supports the open-source Ogg Vorbis format (.ogg) and not .mp3, and IE9 only supports the .mp3 format and not the .ogg format. So how come we can hear .mp3 in our Firefox and .ogg in our IE9, the answer is that the browser is not supporting the format, however, your browser's plugin most commonly Flash, Silverlight or any other plugin player supporting the format. What the diff? The diff is that HTML5, the latest standard set by W3C which sets the standards for the internet, does not use any plugin or extension to play your media. This means that with HTML5 your audio or video will just play without installing any other plugin or extension.

In the following tutorial, I will show you a step by step conversion from .mp3 to .ogg format. I will be using VLC, if you are not familiar with VLC, it is time for you to go to their website, because you have been probably been frozen in an iceberg for the past 15 years. In any case, let us begin, by the way you can do the reverse converting from .ogg to .mp3 using the same steps.
Steps to follow.
- Fire up VLC
- Choose Media -> Convert/Save
- Click Add to choose file to convert
- Look for the file to convert and load it up
- Click Convert/Save
- Click Browse
- Go to location where you want to save file, enter the filename including the extension (.ogg)
- Choose Ogg Vorbis in profile
- Click Start
- Wait for it to finish
- You have 2 copies

My residence is outside the United States of America. I have long been envious of friends and relatives who have access and take for granted the amount of content only available to residents of the United States. Sites such as Hulu, Netflix, Vudu and others have long evaded my access. Not anymore, with the my discovery of StrongVPN, a virtual private network provider.

When Pandora started, it was a great service that provided music based on my selection of artists. When the record companies complained, Pandora had to close the doors on us 'non-americans'. I have since searched for ways to revive the ability to listen to Pandora. I have used free proxy services, and services like Hotspot Shield, I had minimal success, since the bandwidth is extremely limited and I was riddled with tons of ads.
Then I stumbled upon the idea of a VPN server as a conduit. At first, I was planning to setup a private remote VPN server in the US, but then I had to find someone willing to host the server for me, configure it and hopefully, be able to troubleshoot the server when problem arises and also willing to pay the electric bill. After which, I stumbled upon companies that are VPN providers and have the necessary infrastructure and just requires a subscription. After careful consideration, the first solution was free but I had to do all the work, or the second solution, subscribe and pay a monthly fee and get the service right there and then. I eventually chose the second solution, I evaluated several VPN companies and settled with StrongVPN.

Backing up MySQL can be a chore, especially doing it manually. It's a good thing, Ryan Haynes posted a short script that should automate backing up in the MySQLDump reference manual page, it was further enhanced by Bill Hernandez in the same post. I have added my own tweaks to the script, and am using it to backup my MySQL databases. Read on to get the script.
